FAQs
Below are some questions we sometimes get.
Can't I just buy the MBM-1 Midi Bass Module and plug my own bass into it?
No. It's important to note that the MBM-1 Midi Bass Module doesn't perform the midi conversion process; this happens within the bass itself. The MBM-1 simply routes power, audio and MIDI signals to and from the bass and is useless without the bass.
Can I buy the IR MIDI electronics separately and retrofit my own bass?
No, to retrofit a bass with our system is a complex process, we do not have the staff to provide the technical support that would be needed to support such projects.
Can I buy an Industrial Radio Midi Bass in a store?
No, we do not sell our basses through stores. The Midi Bass is naturally costly to produce because the product is like having two great products rolled into one. A quality bass construction on the one hand and a top-of-the-line midi system on the other. If we put the basses through stores they would probably double in price.
Is the Midi Bass a 13-pin system?
No, the 13-pin systems use "pitch-to-voltage" technology for midi conversion. The Midi Bass was actually designed to replace "pitch-to-voltage" midi systems by providing greatly improved midi tracking.
Does the Midi Bass use the Graph Tech ghost® pickup system?
We use Graph Tech piezo saddles in our system, however, the piezos connect directly to our internal electronics. The Midi Bass uses the piezo outputs to measure the dynamic energy in the strings. The piezo outputs are not available for external wiring.
Is the IR Midi Bass compatible with Roland products like the VB-99 V-Bass System?
No, the IR Midi Bass is not a 13-pin system so cannot be patched to such products.
I don't like Jazz Bass® guitars all that much. Will IR build me a custom bass?
The instrument houses complex electronic systems in its body and its neck so it is not practical to build a custom instrument as the engineering investment to design a new instrument is very high.
Can I return the Midi Bass if it's not what I expected?
Yes. See the Return Policy section on the order page for more information.
Does the Midi Bass have built in sounds?
No, the Midi Bass doesn't have internal sounds. The concept behind our product is to provide an ultra low latency, high quality midi signal that can be connected to hundreds of sound modules and software plugins that have been developed over the last 40 years.
Does my choice of strings effect the MIDI conversion?
No, nickel or stainless steel both work fine.
What is the landed price of the bass to my country?
Unfortunately, we can't give our customers an exact landed price for the Midi Bass because we can't exactly predict what customs fees a Midi Bass shipment will incur prior to shipping. Customs related fees are determined at the time of shipment and depend on many factors which differ from country to country. We can only give you a fixed price for the instrument and shipping charges. See the order page for more information.
Will Industrial Radio be making a 6-string Midi Bass in future?
The midi technology was designed to work for 4, 5 and 6-string formats. However, we have no plans for a 6-string bass at present.
I'm a guitarist and can see your Midi Bass works really well. Will Industrial Radio ever make a 6-string guitar using this technology?
We are looking into it but have no plans for the immediate future.
Does Industrial Radio make left-handed versions of their basses?
We will be offering left-handed instruments for both the PRO-4 and PRO-5 in 2012.
What synth modules does Industrial Radio recommend for use with the Midi Bass?
We are currently writing reveiws of some synths that have all the best features to use with the Midi Bass, check back soon for more info.
Will the Midi Bass work with my wireless system?
No, the midi bass needs to be connected via the Midi Bass Cable (MBC-8) to the Midi Bass Module (MBM-1).
Can the Midi Bass be used to control video games like Rock Band or Guitar Hero?
No. The Industrial Radio Midi Bass was designed for professional bass players working both live and in the studio. The instrument only works with midi compatible devices and was never intended to be a games controller and doesn't try to interact with these types of games. We discourage purchase of a Midi Bass purely for this application.
